Older Sedan, Avant and allroad vehicles can have market-dependent petrol or diesel engines, manual, multitronic, S tronic or tiptronic transmissions and very different electronics.
Confirm engine and gearbox codes before fluids or parts.Combustion and mild-hybrid A6 vehicles add more networked control, driver assistance and available air-suspension systems. TFSI e adds plug-in-hybrid charging and thermal circuits.

The badge is not the specification
Before prescribing oil, gearbox fluid, brake parts, batteries or programming, the workshop should verify VIN, build date, source market, engine code, gearbox code, drivetrain, PR codes, suspension, brake package, electrification and fitted assistance systems. Previous coding, retrofits, tuning and non-standard wheels also belong in the intake.
A service-history screenshot can help, but it does not show what is physically installed today. A useful inspection compares the digital identity with labels, equipment and the car itself. That prevents an S line car from being treated as an S6, a TFSI e from being described as an e-tron, or an imported configuration from receiving a UAE-market assumption.

Combustion, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric A6 vehicles share a name but not a complete service process.

Combustion and mild hybrid
Confirm the engine, oil approval and quantity, gearbox code, exact quattro system and whether the car uses 12V only, 48V mild-hybrid or MHEV plus equipment. Voltage support can be essential before scanning and programming.
Maintenance follows the exact schedule and history. A fluid change cannot repair worn hardware, and a reset does not prove the work was completed.
Plug-in hybrid A6
A6 TFSI e and current e-hybrid models combine combustion service with a high-voltage battery, charging inlet, electric motor, regenerative braking and additional thermal management. A charging complaint should state whether AC charging fails, whether the engine still runs and which message appears.
Accepted high-voltage scope must be confirmed before booking.
Battery-electric A6 e-tron
The PPE-based A6 e-tron requires separate battery-data, underbody, AC and DC charging, thermal and drive-unit identification. Tyres, brakes, suspension, AC and low-voltage work may be accepted without assuming the workshop performs every high-voltage battery repair.

A universal minor or major package hides the decisions an A6 owner actually needs. Gearbox servicing must follow the code. S tronic, tiptronic, older multitronic and manual arrangements use different fluids, filters, level procedures and adaptation expectations. Quattro service may involve front, centre, rear or sport-differential items depending on the vehicle.

The decisive test changes with the system. These A6 routes show why the same warning can lead to very different repairs.

Engine and cooling decisions
Cooling pressure, visible leak evidence and live temperature data can separate an external leak from fan control, thermostat behaviour, circulation or a more complex internal concern. Oil-pressure, compression and leak-down tests are used only when symptoms or measurements justify them.
Engine repair may be targeted, internally overhauled or compared with a verified used, rebuilt or rare new assembly. The completed estimate must include root-cause correction, seals, fluids, machining where needed, ancillary components and the closing tests.
Gearbox and quattro checks

Ride, steering and brakes
Standard dampers, adaptive dampers, air suspension and optional all-wheel steering require different measurements and alignment decisions. MMI and assistance systems

Inspect the configuration you will own
A used A6 inspection should confirm VIN, build date, source market, generation, body style, engine, gearbox, drivetrain and electrification before condition is judged. Cold start, hot restart, full-system scan, leak inspection and a safe cold and warm road test create the mechanical baseline.

Coolant loss without a visible puddle
This is a worked example, not a claimed customer case. An A6 owner reports a slowly falling coolant level with no overheating and no obvious puddle. The first inspection finds dried residue but no active leak. Possible routes include a cap, hose connection, pump, thermostat housing, heat exchanger or a leak that appears only hot.
